Overnight Care through Waking Nights or Sleeping Nights by Carers at Home

What is Overnight Care?

Overnight care provides peace of mind during the most vulnerable hours of the night. A professional carer stays in the client’s home for a 9-hour shift, offering support while the household sleeps. This can take one of two forms:

•     Sleeping Night: The carer sleeps on-site and is available if needed.
•     Waking Night: The carer remains awake throughout the night to monitor and assist the client proactively.

Why Might Someone Need Overnight Care?

Overnight care offers safety, comfort, and continuity—especially when emergencies are harder to detect due to reduced visibility or delayed response. Common reasons include:

•     Dementia or Alzheimer’s: To reduce wandering and manage night-time confusion.
•     Temporary absence of family members: When loved ones are away overnight.
•     Post-hospital discharge: For increased monitoring during recovery.
•     Incontinence support: Ensuring dignity and hygiene throughout the night.
•     Medication management: Timely administration of night-time doses.
•     Emotional reassurance: Night-time can heighten feelings of vulnerability.
•     Fall prevention: Assistance with bathroom visits or repositioning.
•     Skin integrity care: Regular turning to prevent pressure sores or skin breakdown.

Not to be confused with live in care

Overnight care is distinct from live-in care, where a carer resides in the home and provides support throughout the day and night. If you're exploring round-the-clock care, please visit our live in care page.
